We have been in a little bit of a horror and ice stories spree these past weeks. It started when my friend showed me the miniseries The Terror based on the Dan Simmons book of the same name and the real historical disaster of the Franklin Expedition. What I didn’t expect was to discover that one of my all time favourite dark music / doom metal/ orchestral bands, Janus actually came up with a single, …song …thing that would capture the darkness and desperation of the tale in such an amazing musical package.

I really need to do an article on the Janus band/project alone. Their dark themes, the musical ambience, the unique musical blend, the powerful vocals and lyrics. But for now, I will stick to just that one song, that 32 minute song. A masterpiece of dark ambience and metal. Please keep in mind, music from this band is VERY difficult to find, and I’m afraid that for obvious reasons, I won’t be able to share the entire thing here, lest I intentionally undermine one of my favorite bands, discouraging potential fans from looking them up, I’m certain you will find a way.
What I can do is share some of the official released segments so you can get a taste. I’m also providing the song’s lyrics and translation for those who have full access to the song. Also be aware that there is a live chamber music version of this song that you don’t want to miss. You can buy the album here in Bandcamp, and here in their official store. The second link presents a collection piece, with art, graphical novel and album included. However it is a very limited print, so it might not be available in the official store or outside of Germany. Their website is still worth a tour, to learn more about Janus and their music.

Epilogue note: “Amarok” is a word of Inuit origin, specifically from Inuktitut, the language spoken by the Inuit people in parts of Canada and Greenland. In Inuktitut, “amarok” refers to a legendary creature or spirit, often depicted as a giant wolf or wolf-like creature. It’s a figure in Inuit mythology, similar to how wolves are depicted in other cultures’ mythologies. The amarok is usually portrayed as a powerful and fearsome being, sometimes associated with hunting or other natural forces. Not unlike Tuunbaq in The Terror book and series.
Wew that was a long song! And quite a lot of work to code and try to get the translations right. I still want to do write more about other Janus songs. I wish more people will know about this amazing band and their criminally underrated music. This song is a horror story by itself. In my opinion this song adds as much to the legend of the Frankin expedition as the book or the series.
